The LP Search Test

What LPs find before they ever take your call.

Summary

LPs do not wait for a deck to form an opinion. Before they reply to an intro, they search: LinkedIn, Google, and now ChatGPT or Perplexity. What they find in those few minutes decides whether the call happens.

That search has changed in a way most GPs have not accounted for. It used to end at a first page of results you could roughly predict. It now runs through models that answer in a paragraph, draw on whatever is indexed about you, and give the LP no reason to click through and check. You cannot edit that paragraph. You can only change what it has to work from.

The pattern we see is consistent. The problem is almost never credibility, and it is almost never the website. It is that the record is thin, dated, or inconsistent across the three places an LP actually looks, and the fund is the last to know.

That is a visibility problem, not a reputation one, which is the good news: it is usually fixable in weeks rather than quarters, and the fixes are cheap compared to the meetings they cost.

What it covers

Ten yes-or-no questions across four areas. You need nothing but a browser, and it is meant to be done before your next raise, not during it.

1

Search and AI visibility

What the first page of results and an AI answer currently say about you and the fund.

2

LinkedIn presence

Whether your headline and your recent posts reinforce the thesis you are raising on.

3

Track record evidence

Whether a stranger can verify any part of your record without asking you for it.

4

Consistency

Whether your website, your deck and your LinkedIn describe the thesis in the same language.

One of the ten questions

Sample

Ask ChatGPT or Perplexity who you are and what your fund invests in. Does the answer match your actual thesis?

How the scoring works

One point per yes. Ten questions, three bands. The full test explains what each band means and ranks the ten fixes in the order an LP encounters them, so you can work down the list rather than guessing.

Most GPs who run this for the first time land in the middle band, and the gaps are rarely where they expect.
